Persephone Market Garden is at home on 100 acres of forest, swamp, and meadows, between Owen Sound and Sauble Beach. Kristine is the primary farmer, supported by Thorsten and our children Oskar, Marilla and Frieda. We started market gardening in 2009 and our production has grown from 0.75 acres to 1.5 acres. The vegetables are complemented by a small flock of sheep and chickens, as well as some fruit production (blueberries, currants, apple and pear trees). We market through a Community Shared Agriculture program, with a delivery season of 20 weeks (June – October), Eat Local Grey Bruce Cooperative (online farmers market), and direct to restaurants. In 2019, we dove into no-till growing, inspired by Singing Frogs Farm in California. We are very encouraged by the approach and will continue onward in 2020! Our farm is home to a day camp in the summer (July and August) and a farm school (September to June).
We focus on lean operations, regenerative practices, and community building.
Over the years, we have developed a comprehensive farmer training program – trainees receive detailed crop plans, standard operating procedures that describe our production process form seeding to washing and packing, in-the-field training, as well as monthly workshops. Our goal is the give you a foundation of knowledge and skills in farming, from the soil to business management.
